This paper looks at the reasons behind Israel's strategy of striking heavily populated civilian areas in response to Hamas’s firing of rockets and missiles into its territory in July 2014. The author suggests these include 1) Israelis belief that they live in a region in which their safety is never guaranteed; 2) Israeli frustration over the repeated failures of peace talks; and 3) the rising power of the national religious camp in the country.
