This publication 1) contains various articles that explore the development of political parties in different Balkan states, and 2) discusses the negative impact these often non-democratic and monopolistic parties are having on the EU integration process. To combat this problem, and subsequently ensure the EU’s democratization agenda is successful in the Balkans, the European Commission should treat the democratic performance of political parties and party systems in the same way as it does other formal accession requirements.
