This paper contemplates the particular roles crisis management mechanisms (CMM) might play in a future Sino-American crisis in the East China Sea. In doing so, the paper draws upon the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 to help identify how such a crisis could be managed and what general CMM principles might apply. The danger in such a scenario, the paper concludes, would be to apply these mechanism and principles in excessively technical or mechanical ways.
