Given the US's heralded pivot towards the Asia-Pacific region and China’s insistence on radically revising its relationship with its partial rival, this monograph contemplates what might be the most advantageous strategic relationship between the two countries. In the case of China, the monograph concludes that it should keep its hegemonic aspirations in check and define itself as a cooperative partner in an existing world system. The US, in turn, will have to steer a course between deterring and reassuring Chinese leaders.
