This paper examines the historical foundations of Chinese humanitarian thought and how the concept of humanitarianism specifically evolved after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. The paper concludes that Chinese humanitarianism, both in thought and deed, has been consistently shaped by the ancient Confucian concepts of responsibility and legitimacy.
