This brief discusses Myanmar's contested national ceasefire agreement which is expected to be signed by the government and the coalition of ethnic non-state armed groups. The authors argue that to secure sustainable peace there is an acute need to begin discussing the livelihood options and political possibilities ex-combatants in Myanmar. They propose a combination of military, political and economic integration options for ex-combatants and caution against the rolling out of government-led development interventions in the conflict-affected areas without due consideration for the consequences these could have for the peace process.
