This report examines the trends in South America which have challenged the ability of states in the region to continue to strengthen their economies, promote growth, fight poverty and reduce economic and social inequality. These include 1) the loss of economic dynamism due to the nature of existing development strategies and the global financial crisis; and 2) increasing criticism within the countries of the performance of political institutions, mechanisms of political participation, government policies and politicians. The author also reviews the region’s political and economic prospects as well as the main challenges facing countries in the region.
