This commentary discusses the US and EU economic sanctions imposed on Russia's off-shore oil projects in the Arctic in 2014. The author argues that the sanctions are not primarily aimed at damaging Russia's economy, but rather serve as a reminder to Moscow that it will need international cooperation to fulfil its economic ambitions. The author also highlights that the imposition of sanctions on the Arctic projects does not mean that the region is geoeconomically important.
