In light of the September 2014 democratic elections in Fiji, which were the first since a coup led to military rule in 2006, this brief discusses what action Australia could take to back Fiji's further transition to democracy. The author argues that Australia should use what leverage it has to assist Fiji’s Parliament, offering an enhanced military relationship and support for the rule of law as a means of encouraging the Fijian government’s commitment to democracy.
