This commentary argues that the 2014 crisis in eastern Ukraine has not changed the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia’s perceptions of their relations with Russia, which are primarily dominated by trade ties. The author contends that the EU’s idea of tightening sanctions against Moscow is therefore treated with much caution by these countries, even if this reluctance does not appreciate the importance of the Ukrainian–Russian conflict and its direct threat to the security of their region.
