This commentary discusses the effect which a vote for independence in the 2014 Scottish referendum could have on the UK’s nuclear forces, which are based 40 kilometers northwest of Glasgow. The author argues that in the case of a vote for independence the UK will, despite numerous obstacles, most likely strive not only to retain but also to modernize its nuclear forces, especially in light of the growing tensions between NATO and Russia.
