This commentary examines the differences in the nature of the threats posed by the Islamic State (IS) and Al-Qaeda. The author contends that although the international coalition assembled by the US in the Middle East should act against these organizations, it should not prioritize air strikes aimed at Middle Eastern jihadists, but should rather concentrate on providing assistance to Syrian rebels and applying political pressure in Iraq.
