This commentary examines how Syrian President Al-Assad's strategy of pursuing the civil war in Syria has strengthened religious extremist groups such as the Islamic State (IS). The author also contends that a stronger IS improves the chances of the Al-Assad regime surviving - as a bulwark against the seeming threat posed by IS to the wider region and world.
