This commentary discusses the trends and developments that have forced US President Obama's administration to reassess its strategic pivot towards the Asia-Pacific and renew its focus on the Middle East and Europe. In particular, the author talks about the impact that Russia's involement in the crisis in Ukraine and the rise of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria have had on the rebalancing strategy as well as Washington's future relations with China.
