This commentary discusses the state of Japan-Russia ties and the prospects for a rapprochement between the two countries following a deterioration in relations that occurred as a result of Moscow's annexation of Crimea. The author also examines the reasons why Japan desires an improvement in its relations with Russia before suggesting that Moscow's natural gas deal with Beijing and other factors suggest that the outlook for such a warming of Moscow-Tokyo relations is bleak.
