This paper provides a brief overview of US-Japan-India relations in the post-Cold War period and examines why Tokyo warmly welcomed the meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Barack Obama that took place in September 2014. The author argues that Japan was pleased as Tokyo believes that at a minimum, an improvement in Washington-New Delhi ties should help strengthen Japan-India security cooperation, something that could also help Japan deal with China.
