This paper examines the factors threatening stability in the Arctic region, arguing that the greatest challenges come from outside the region, but that there are reasons to be optimistic about security. Indeed, the author suggests that the Arctic nations have generally crated a security environment in the region based on trust and goodwill, meaning the most potent threat to region's stability comes from the potential affect of external international developments on Arctic relations, such as the dispute over Russia's involvement in the Ukraine crisis.
