This paper discusses unique aspects of post-socialist cities in terms of their institutional capacity for transformation into capitalist, post-industrial cities that are integrated within global urban networks. The paper briefly reviews the basic approaches to the study of cities in urban sociology, considering the ways in which they capture the complex transformation of post-socialist cities. The author analyzes important aspects of the post-socialist city transformation, points out divergences and/or convergences between post-socialist cities within Europe, and investigates ex-Yugoslav cities as a sub-type of post-socialist cities.
