This brief looks at the origins, evolution, and aims of the terrorist group Islamic State (IS) and considers whether the approach adopted by the international coalition against the group will be able to bring about its destruction. The author also examines the paramilitary competence of IS, the level of external support for IS across the Middle East and beyond, and the question of whether the group wants the West to go to war with it.
