This paper discusses the role of military conscription in Danish society. The author analyzes whether conscription in Denmark has contributed to the tight links between state, nation and people, or whether it has been seen as non-Danish but accepted as a kind of military necessity. The paper speculates on the future of conscription in Denmark and examines conscription in light of the changing international security environment.
