This brief examines Myanmar’s ASEAN chairmanship in 2014. It also discusses 1) Myanmar’s historical relationship with ASEAN since the founding of the regional organization in 1967; 2) Myanmar’s agenda in light of the upcoming establishment of the ASEAN Community in 2015; 3) the challenges Myanmar has encountered as chair of ASEAN, including the South China Sea disputes; and 4) the country's domestic problems resulting from logistical infrastructure challenges and human rights issues.
