This commentary provides an overview of the tensions between the Uyghur minority in China’s Xinjiang autonomous region and the central government in Beijing. The author argues that unless Beijing is willing to pursue a more nuanced, diplomatic and inclusive approach, there will be further clashes between the two sides in the coming years.
