This paper discusses the role the G20 should play in reforming the existing global trading system. The author argues that the G20 should provide political leadership by defining and adopting a new global trade and investment regime that can respond to growing challenges such as the rise of protectionism, climate change and increasing frustration with the multilateral trading system. He suggests, however, that the G20 has moved in the wrong direction, with recent communiqués referring to regional agreements. Consequently, he looks at what the group can do to return to the issue of reform of the global trading system.
