This paper examines the various military responses carried out by Western and Middle Eastern states to counter the threat posed by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). In particular, it looks at 1) the 2014 airstrikes conducted by the US and UK in Iraq and Syria; 2) the military capabilities of ISIS; and 3) the views of the UK government, defense experts, and the US and other nations regarding the question of whether to deploy ground troops in order to combat ISIS.
