This paper examines the reasons why China decided to join the G20 rather than the G8 and reviews China’s participation in the forum since the first G20 Leaders' Summit took place in November 2008. The author argues that China has gained immensely from its participation in the G20 and that through the forum the country has entered the center stage of global economic governance, something which has allowed it to demonstrate that it is a responsible great power. The author also outlines the weaknesses Chinese scholars believe remain in Beijing's participation in the G20 summit process.
