This paper examines the process involved in the EU’s attempts to establish a European banking union. The authors first examine the reasons why the EU decided to take on the project of creating a banking union, including those resulting from the pressures of the 2008 European financial crisis. They then look at some of the institutions the EU has created - particularly the Single Supervisory Mechanism and the Single Resolution Mechanism - to bring about a banking union before discussing what steps the EU must take next to establish a genuine economic and monetary union.
