This paper provides an overview the League of Arab States, a loose confederation of 22 Arab nations that was set up in 1945 to improve coordination among its members on matters of common interest. More specifically, the authors examine 1) the League's charter, 2) the concept of Pan-Arabism; 3) Egypt's role in the Arab League during President Gamel Abdel Nasser's and Anwar Sadad's time in power as well as divisions within the league; and 4) the opportunities which have existed for reforming the League.
