This monograph examines why the Islamist-secularist divide is getting worse in the Arab Middle East and what the US can do to reduce it, but only within the scope of its own interests and values. The aggressive behavior of Islamist parties and previous US reactions to the problem are prime topics in the monograph, as is the need to reorient the priorities of Arab militaries. In the last case, the armed forces must concentrate on eradicating external and internal terrorist threats instead of helping prop up exclusionary regimes.
