This paper examines the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), a principal East African regional organization that includes Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda. In particular, the author examines 1) the geopolitics of the region IGAD covers; 2) the history, membership, mission and institutional makeup of the organization; and 3) its major areas of engagement, which include regional peace and security, institutional development, governance, economic cooperation and integration, food security, and environmental issues.
