This paper examines US policy and strategy in Afghanistan since its intervention in the country in 2001 to explore what approach Washington should adopt following its 2014 troop withdrawal. In particular, the authors look at 1) whether the US only developed security interests in Afghanistan and its region because of 9/11; 2) whether Washington's strategy to pursue these interests was successful and appropriate; 3) the external conditions affecting US involvement in Afghanistan; 5) the strategy the US should adopt to achieve its interests in Afghanistan; and 6) the risks and challenges associated with the potential new strategies Washington could adopt.
