This paper discusses the accusations from many US and European commentators that Turkey is drifting back to authoritarianism under its newly elected president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his restructuring of the country's politics. More specifically, the author examines several questions relating to Erdoğan's rule of Turkey: 1) How broad is support for Erdoğan’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) across society? 2) What can be expected of the new government? 3) How fundamental is the reconstruction of the political system? 4) What does the it mean for the future of democracy? And 5) How can and should Europe respond?
