This paper looks at Beijing's position toward the crises in Afghanistan, Iraq, Mali, Pakistan and Ukraine to determine whether China will take greater responsibility for dealing with international crises. The author suggests that the overall picture that emerges is that the country is too restrained to act as a great power, and that it is unlikely to become directly involved in other countries unless its core national interests are directly threatened and when it is unable to rely on others to take responsibility.
