This paper discusses the growing relevance of energy in EU-Turkey relations, focusing on Turkey’s increasing importance in enhancing EU energy security. The author also provides a brief history of EU-Turkey relations and Turkey's Union membership negotiations. In general, the author argues that the EU and Turkey have a number of common energy challenges and that this provides both actors with an opportunity to intensify their levels of cooperation and integration. He also contends that the best way to reach the full potential of such cooperation and integration is for the two actors to open the energy chapter in Turkey’s EU accession negotiations.
