This paper examines the integration strategy adopted by the ASEAN countries following the 1997 economic crisis in Asia. The author evaluates how and why ASEAN replicated aspects of the EU model superficially without adopting a meaningful super-national identity. She argues that to reach an effective form of regional economic integration, ASEAN countries need to implement deep structural reforms in their domestic systems and overcome their economic, political, and cultural divides.
