This paper provides an overview of the likely security environment Australia will face in light of the government’s preparation for its 2015 Defense White Paper, which will guide future military spending and defense priorities. The authors argue that there the number and type of security contingencies that could affect Australia will grow and that as things stand, the accumulation of risk to the country's interests are already greater than at any time since the Cold War. They also suggest that a guiding principle for the country's defense policy will be how to protect and advance the international rules-based order with its limited resources and highlight the importance of the countries ties to the rest of the world.
