Ahead of the final round of voting in Romania's November 2014 presidential elections, this commentary examines the factors influencing Romanian-Russian relations and what course the ties between the two countries could take following the elections. In particular, the authors examine the influence on Romanian-Russian ties of energy relations between the two states; Bucharest’s special political and military ties with Washington; Moscow and Bucharest's competing interests in Moldova and Ukraine; and the economic and security implications of Moscow's annexation of Crimea for Romania.
