This brief provides an overview of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). More specifically, the author examines 1) the origins and power structure of the CCP; 2) the CCP's 18th National Congress which took place in 2012 and saw Xi Jinping take over from Hu Jintao's in the role of president; 3) the governance challenges the CCP has faced since the 1980s; and 4) the CCP's domestic and foreign policy.
