This commentary examines Russia’s relations with Serbia as well as what part these ties play in Moscow’s relations with the EU. The author contends that, in general, Moscow’s existing strong position in Serbia has been enhanced by Moscow’s soft power initiatives and that Russia’s increasingly active policy towards Serbia and the Serbian minorities in the wider region has played a role in hampering European integration in the Balkans and in maintaining an area of instability in the EU’s region. She also contends that Russian policy in Serbia is becoming more effective due to diminishing support for Balkan countries’ European integration.
