This paper provides an overview of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) and the implications of the election of a new head of the church following the death of the previous leader in July 2014. The author also discusses how the UOC has responded to the conflict in Ukraine and Russia’s intervention in the crisis, arguing that tensions within the church over its relationship with Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church mean it will probably avoid taking a clear stance on the issue.
