This book assesses the way in which the EU budget is financed and offers possible options for how to reform the EU revenue system. In particular, the author 1) provides a historical overview of the EU revenue system and the implications of the calculations of the different EU member state contributions for the EU budget; 2) examines the transparency, equality and democratic accountability of the existing EU revenue system; and 3) looks at issues involved in the EU revenue system, including the problem of how to ensure its legitimacy and the rational of how the EU budget is set.
