This paper examines the factors that have affected levels of support in the US for the country's financial commitments to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD+). In particular, the authors examine the history of support for REDD+ in the US; the politics of REDD+ in the country and Washington's strategy towards REDD+; and the challenges that face efforts to increase REDD+ finance in the US as well as the future of performance-based payments for the scheme.
