This paper examines the structure of the violent organized crime network of 'The Americans' gang in Cape Town, South Africa as well as how organized crime affects governance in the city. In particular, the authors look at 1) the characteristics of the actors involved in the network; 2) the organization and ideology of the gang; and 3) the criminal and non-criminal ways in which the gang's members interacted with one another.
