This publication contends that a number of concerning trends are shaping the political order in the Middle East and North Africa, trends which also transcend existing conceptions of the region as well as previous influences on it. In particular, the four key trends highlighted by the authors are 1) the erosion of state capacities; 2) the restoration of authoritative regimes; 3) the militarization of contentious political issues; and 4) an increase in the number of collective identities that define people’s sense of belonging and politics.
