This backgrounder reviews the current status of two armed groups in Colombia -- The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the National Liberation Army (ELN). More specifically, it examines 1) the history, ideology and financing of both groups; 2) their ties with armed groups in other countries; 3) their relative decline since 2002; and 4) the prospects for a lasting peace between the FARC, ELN and government.
