This paper provides an overview of democracy and the political system in Hong Kong as well as the former British colony's relationship with China. More specifically, the author examines 1) the political status of Hong Kong; 2) Hong Kong's economic connection to mainland China; 3) the main political tensions between Beijing and Hong Kong; 4) China's plan for Hong Kong; 5) whether Hong Kong is united when it comes to the issue of democratic reform; and 6) the influence of foreign actors on Hong Kong's democratization process.
