This paper summarizes and analyzes the key reform policies undertaken since President Xi Jinping took power in China. The author argues that while the West had high hopes that the market would play a ‘decisive role’ in China, most of the reforms will be inward-looking and gradual, and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) will retain a tight control over the main levers of the Chinese economy.
