This brief examines China's priorities in the Middle East and argues that although Beijing is reluctant to become involved in the complex politics of the region, its growing dependence on Middle Eastern oil and gas is likely to undo its current emphasis on economic relations alone. In other words, ensuring the security of its energy supplies will become increasingly important over time.
