This brief discusses the issue of involuntary loss of nationality in one of the EU member states. More specifically, the authors assess the grounds for loss of nationality in light of European and international standards with regards to 1) the prevention of the arbitrary deprivation of nationality, 2) the principle of proportionality, and 3) strong procedural guarantees. They then formulate recommendations for national policy makers, judges and other authorities who deal with issues on loss of nationality.
