This paper examines India’s Look East Policy, which has shaped the country’s engagement with the Asia-Pacific since 1991, and how it could develop following Narendra Modi’s victory in the country’s 2014 general elections. The author contends that in the years leading up 2014, India signaled a willingness to play a strategic role in the Asia Pacific, partly due to its strategy toward China and its desire to enhance its global role. She then argues that due to India’s growing economic and strategic interests - based on its partnerships with Japan, Vietnam, Australia, and ASEAN – Modi’s government will also seek to increase its role in the Asia-Pacific.
