This paper defends the Australian police and security forces in how they handled the December 15-16 2014 hostage-taking incident in Sydney. The author, however, is critical of Australia's asylum policy, which allowed the hostage taker, Man Haron Monis, to be allowed into the country. Furthermore, he touches upon the implications resulting from the incident for the way in which the Australian justice system treats those suffering from mental illness.
